Why We Speak Up

At N.E. Service, we believe every child and every person is created with inherent dignity and worth. Human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable people have no place in our communities, and we are passionate about raising awareness and supporting efforts to protect those at risk.

We proudly support organizations dedicated to exposing online child exploitation, educating the public about the dangers of trafficking, and helping remove predators from our communities through lawful cooperation with law enforcement and victim advocacy efforts.

By sharing their work, we hope to encourage greater awareness, inspire community involvement, and provide opportunities for others to support these important missions. The organizations featured below have dedicated countless hours to protecting children, educating families, and shining a light on crimes that often go unseen.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”

Edmund Burke

Warning Signs of
Human Trafficking

Human trafficking hides in plain sight. One sign alone does not confirm trafficking, but multiple signs together warrant concern. Click each sign to learn more.

Appears coached or scripted when speaking. May look to another person before answering questions or avoid eye contact entirely.
Is monitored, escorted, or never allowed to be alone. Someone else may speak on their behalf at all times.
Is not allowed to keep their own ID, passport, or important documents. These may be held by a third party.
Shows physical signs of abuse, malnutrition, exhaustion, or untreated injuries. May appear fearful when injuries are mentioned.
Appears fearful, anxious, or overly submissive. May show signs of psychological trauma or extreme deference to others.
Lives in overcrowded, unsafe, or unusual conditions at or near their place of work with little freedom.
Works extremely long hours with little or no pay. Earnings may go entirely to a third party.
Is not free to come and go. Transportation is controlled and movement is monitored or restricted.
Has suddenly cut off contact with family and friends, often at the direction of another person.
Is unable to clarify where they live, work, or sleep. May give inconsistent or rehearsed answers.
Appears controlled by an older boyfriend, girlfriend, employer, or authority figure who makes all decisions.
Has tattoos, brands, or markings that may indicate ownership, affiliation, or control by a third party.
Frequently moves between hotels, motels, or locations. Has no stable residence or permanent address.
Another person insists on answering for them, translating unnecessarily, or controlling the interaction.

⚠ Do not confront a suspected trafficker. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. To report information, contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Document details safely — descriptions, locations, license plates — without putting yourself at risk. Your report could save a life.

Common Myths
vs. Reality

Misconceptions prevent recognition and reporting. Here is the truth.

✓ Reality:Trafficking occurs in urban, suburban, and rural communities across the United States — including West Virginia. It happens in every zip code.
✓ Reality:Many victims are controlled through fear, manipulation, debt, threats, addiction, or psychological coercion rather than physical restraints. They may appear to move freely.
✓ Reality:Men, women, boys, and girls can all become victims of human trafficking, regardless of age, race, or background. Anyone can be targeted.
✓ Reality:Victims may not identify themselves as victims, may fear law enforcement, or may be psychologically conditioned not to seek help. Never assume silence means safety.
✓ Reality:The majority of human trafficking cases in the United States involve U.S. citizens and occur entirely within the country, often within the victim's own community.
✓ Reality:Trafficking victims often look like anyone else. They may be well-dressed, working normal jobs, or living in ordinary neighborhoods. Trafficking rarely looks like the movies.

Internet Safety
for Families

Technology is frequently used by traffickers and predators to recruit and manipulate victims. Awareness and open communication are your family’s first line of defense.

👁️
Monitor Activity

Know what apps, games, and platforms your children use. Review privacy settings and friend lists regularly.

💬
Talk Openly

Have regular, age-appropriate conversations about online safety and what to do if something feels wrong.

🔒
Guard Personal Info

Never share home addresses, school names, or daily routines with strangers online.

⚠️
Recognize Grooming

Predators build trust over time through gifts and attention. Teach children to recognize manipulation.

📞
Report Suspicious Behavior

Report suspicious contact to CyberTipline.org (NCMEC) or local law enforcement.

🏠
Create Safe Space

Ensure children know they won’t be punished for reporting uncomfortable situations. Trust saves lives.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

Proverbs 31:8
