How to Create a Bootable Flash Drive and Reinstall Windows

If your PC is facing serious issues and you need to reinstall the Windows operating system, a bootable USB flash drive is an essential tool. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of creating a bootable flash drive and reinstalling Windows on your PC.

Note: Before you begin, ensure you have a valid Windows product key and backup any important data from your PC as the reinstallation process will erase all data on your system drive.

Requirements

  1. A USB flash drive with a minimum capacity of 8GB.
  2. A working computer with internet access.
  3. A valid Windows product key.

Instructions

Step 1

Download Windows Installation Media:

  1. Using a web browser, go to the official Microsoft website https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/
  2. Choose the Operating System you wish to install.
  3. Scroll down and under "Create Windows installation media," click on the "Download tool now" button.
  4. Run the downloaded tool (MediaCreationTool.exe).

Step 2

Create a Bootable USB Flash Drive:

  1. The tool will prompt you with the "Windows  Setup" window. Accept the License Terms.
  2. Choose the "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC" option and click "Next."
  3. Select the language, edition, and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) of Windows you want to install. Make sure to choose the same edition as your existing Windows installation.
  4. Choose the "USB flash drive" option and click "Next."
  5. Select your USB flash drive from the list. Ensure it's empty, as all data will be deleted during this process. Click "Next."
  6. The tool will download Windows files and create a bootable USB drive. This may take some time.
  7. Once the process is complete, you'll see a message that says "Your USB flash drive is ready."

Step 3

Boot from the USB Flash Drive:

  1. Insert the bootable USB flash drive into the PC you want to reinstall Windows on.
  2. Turn on or restart your PC.
  3. During the startup process as soon as it boots up, press the key (usually F2, F12, ESC, or Delete) to access the BIOS or UEFI settings. The key varies depending on your computer's manufacturer; refer to your PC's manual for the correct key.
  4. In the BIOS or UEFI settings, navigate to the "Boot" or "Boot Order" section.
  5. Change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive as the first boot device.
  6. Save your changes and exit the BIOS or UEFI settings.

Step 4

  Install Windows:

  1. Your PC will boot from the USB flash drive, and the Windows installation process will begin.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows. Enter your Windows product key when prompted, if you need one Click Here.
  3. Choose your installation preferences, including language, time, and keyboard settings.
  4. When asked where to install Windows, select your system drive (usually labeled "Drive 0 Partition X") and format it. This will erase all data on the selected drive.
  5. Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  6. Once the installation is complete, your PC will restart, and you can set up your new Windows environment.

Congratulations, you've successfully created a bootable flash drive and reinstalled Windows on your PC. Your computer should now be up and running with a fresh Windows installation.
